Hello,

Today we’re going to look at how to create a modern/design garden. What are the rules and tips for creating a modern garden or designer terrace?

By design garden, we generally mean an outdoor space that differs from classic gardens (English, Japanese, French) or contemporary gardens in that it is uncluttered, sober and to the point. However, there is no precise definition of a modern-design garden, leading to a certain amount of confusion surrounding the term and often an amalgam with the contemporary garden.

In our opinion, the true modern/design garden is a hyper-minimalist garden where the plant (always under control) is present in a very organized way: aligned, grouped by identical species but with few species… It is strongly inspired by the Japanese/zen garden, but focuses on outdoor decorative elements: landscaping or furniture. More than ever, the garden is an extension of the interior, using the same codes.

Shapes are either straight, upright or round, but never uncontrolled or disheveled, nothing protruding; this is the antithesis of the natural garden.

Plants are often reduced to their simplest expression, always green: lawns, boxwood balls or perfect symmetrical shapes: cordilynes, grasses, palms… Colors: white, light gray, dark gray, black, brushed metal… In terms of materials, glass is essential and has replaced metal (gates, railings), anchored on white/grey or rough-painted concrete. The rule is to limit materials to give the impression that everything is smooth and continuous. Outdoor furniture is often made of high-quality resin or plastic. A touch of color is brought by an exceptional object, or even a designer object; but always in a large size, there’s no room here for small formats (including pots): small is cheap, big is design!

The advantage of modern/design is that it’s a style that requires few (but expensive) elements, and is constantly evolving with new techniques and materials. But beware: a real designer garden is only affordable for the big bucks.
